Death and despair
By Hans F. Brobjerg

“In fear we trust!”
When God has lost,
And justice is no more;
When truth and right
Have lost their might,
As we have lost their lore.

Equality,
Which used to be,
Now equals something else:
“In sameness shall
We all be nil!”
So, nothingness prevails.

A deadly threat
Before was met
With equanimity;
For child and wife,
Preserved by strife,
Would set the spirit free.

Now happiness
Has lost her dress;
Stands naked on the stage.
Where wisdom's feast
Her then increased,
Her flesh, now, is our sage.

Me does not fright
the fated might
of death, who reaps his share;
I fear the guest
Who takes the rest,
Who steals the soul: despair.
